Town of the Blue Mountains and Collingwood set to play host to National and International Snowboard Athletes days before the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games

BLUE MOUNTAINS: Snowboard Ontario will host the first of two North American (NorAm) Cup snowboard race events scheduled in 2014 on Saturday January 25th & Sunday January 26th at Alpine Ski Club in the Town of the Blue Mountains. NorAm Cup events are one step below a World Cup and will see Canadian National Team athletes in attendance as well as athletes from the United States and Australia.

"We are so excited to be hosting an event of such a high level of competition at Alpine” said Tyler King, Director of Snowboarding for Alpine Ski Club. “We last hosted a Snowboardcross NorAm in 2009 and are honored to have local and International athletes compete in front their friends, family and the members of Alpine Ski Club.”

"It's exciting to be able to have a NorAm race at home” said Matt Carter, Canadian National Team Athlete and Ontario Native. “Being from Ontario but traveling abroad to snowboard I don't often get to share my racing experience with my friends and family. Alpine Ski Club is a great venue to come back to, to race and to compete at; it's one of the places where it all started for me."

The hosting and execution of these events are made possible in part through funding provided by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport through the Celebrate Ontario 2014 International Amateur Sport Hosting grant.

“We are fortunate to have received the financial support required to provide our Ontario athletes with this level of competition” said Janet Richter, Executive Director of Snowboard Ontario. “It also provides an opportunity for us to showcase what the beautiful Blue Mountain area has to offer to national and international teams.”

The second of the two NorAm Cup events is a Snowboardcross scheduled for March 15th – 17th, 2014 at Beaver Valley Ski Club, Markdale Ontario.
