2011 Canada Winter Games – Selection Criteria

Approved by the AOS Board of Directors June 22, 2010

The purpose of this policy is to set out the process for identifying which athletes will be invited by the Association of Ontario Snowboarders (AOS) to participate in the 2011 Canada Winter Games.

 

The 2011 Canada Winter Games Snowboard Technical Package can be found at www.canadasnowboard.ca

 
The intent of the policy is to:
a)      Assure a fair and open process
b)      Assure that the best athletes are selected.

The Canada Winter Games are scheduled to be held February 11 to February 27, 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Selection Committee

The AOS shall appoint a Selection Committee that will be responsible for interpreting and applying this policy.


Eligibility

To be eligible to be selected to participate in the 2011Canada Winter Games, an athlete must:

a)      Be a member in good standing with the AOS

b)      Have purchased a Competitive Membership for the 2011 season;

c)      Be a resident of Ontario on December 31st, 2010;

d)      Meet the age requirements outlined by the Canada Games Council for his/her respective discipline

e)      Meet all eligibility requirements outlined in the Technical Package

f)       Be medically fit to compete.

g)      Submit an application, using the form attached hereto as “Appendix A”, confirming her or his desire to participate in the Canada Winter Games by September 30, 2010.

 
Age Requirements

The age requirements to participate in the 2011 Canada Games, as dictated by the Canada Games Council with input from Canada~Snowboard, are as follows:

 
Halfpipe

Eligible athletes must be 19 and under as of February 11, 2011.

The minimum age at this date is 13.
 
Parallel Giant Slalom

Eligible athletes must be 21 and under as of February 11, 2011.

The minimum age at this date is 15.
 
Snowboard Cross

Eligible athletes must be 21 and under as of February 11, 2011.

The minimum age at this date is 15.
 
Team Size

The number of athletes selected for the Canada Winter Games is based on a predetermined team size according to the Canada Games Council.

 
Each Province may enter a total of 12 athletes, with a maximum of 6 male and 6 female in all three disciplines; Alpine, Snowboard Cross and Slope Style.
 
There is a maximum of 2 athletes per discipline per gender.
 

Ranking Process- Alpine and Snowboard Cross

Eligible athletes shall be ranked, within their discipline and by gender, according to the sum of the FIS Points earned in their two best competitions entered during the period from December 1, 2009 through to the selection date.

 

Should a tie exist on the FIS points list, the athlete with the most AOS points shall be given the higher ranking.

 

Ranking Process – Halfpipe

Athletes shall ordinarily be selected for participation in the Canada Winter Games according to the sum of the FIS Points earned in their two best competitions entered during the period from December 1, 2009 through to the selection date. However, the AOS shall have the power to select halfpipe athletes to participate in the Canada Winter Games in an order other than that indicated by their FIS rankings.

 

AOS competitive members competing in Freestyle competitions outside of FIS competitions wishing to be considered are required to send their resume, photos and/or videos by September 30, 2010.

Your resume should include:

·         How long you’ve been riding and where you ride

·         Provide details outlining your yearly training and competitive schedule

·         Your coaches name 

·         # of events entered in the 2009/2010 season, please include the name of event, event location, date and competition results

·         Industry sponsorship and level of sponsorship

 

Selection Process

The Selection Date for the 2011Canada Winter Games Team shall be October 15, 2010.

 

Athletes shall ordinarily be selected for participation in the Ontario Winter Games in the order of their ranking. However, the following sections also have a bearing on the final selection.

 

Factors that will be considered by the Selection Committee include, but are not limited to:

·         Participation and success in competitive events

·         Medical condition that prevented the athlete from competing in one or more FIS or AOS events during the time points are accumulated.

·         The athletes commitment to a training and competitive program

·         A completed resume, photos and videos (Halfpipe athletes only)

·         Anomalies in competitions, arising from factors such as weather, abnormally small field sizes, or the gross inflation of the point’s value of the event, which are determined to be a factor in the attainment of or failure to attain points.

·         Other extenuating circumstances.

 

Any decision to select an athlete in an order other than indicated by the rankings shall be done through consultation with the coaches of the athletes involved.

 
Appeals

Appeals to the CWG Selection Criteria can be made under the AOS’ Appeal policy. A non-refundable appeal fee shall apply.

 
Athletes selected to represent snowboarding on Team Ontario will be required to attend all orientation sessions hosted by the Sport Alliance of Ontario prior to the 2011 Canada Winter Games. (dates yet to be determined)
